Register Your Website's Domain Name

Register your domain name (www.yourdomainname.com) with any domain name registration service. The following icons represent several domain name registration services.

GoDaddy $1.99 Domains   Register.com Domain Name Registration   Domain names that mean business

When registering your domain name you will need DNS (domain name server) info. Use the following domain name servers in the listed order:
  • NS1.STORE-STARTER.COM - 69.46.28.156
  • NS2.STORE-STARTER.COM - 69.46.28.157
The domain registrar may ask for a technical contact. Use the following info for your technical contact:

One Net Enterprises, Inc

PO Box 1729
Tampa, FL 33601

Tips for choosing a domain name:
  • Keep it simple so your domain name is easy to remember
  • Creative "catchy" names are good
  • If your domain name relates to your web site's products it may leave a longer lasting impression
  • Shorter domain names are easier to remember
  • Make sure your spelling is correct
  • Do not use words that are commonly or easily misspelled (ex., aardvark)
  • It doesn't hurt to have "key words" in your domain name; key words are nouns that reflect the content of your web site
  • Sometimes a domain name that begins with a letter near the top of the alphabet can be an advantage
  • Above all, choose a name that you like

Setting up your StoreStarter™ website is easy if you use the StoreStarter™ Site Administrator that is integrated into home page of every StoreStarter™ website. The StoreStarter™ Site Administrator allows you to control the look and feel of your StoreStarter™ website.

At the bottom of your StoreStarter™ website's homepage you can find the Site Administrator icon: . Clicking this icon will prompt you for your username and password and then open the StoreStarter™ Site Administrator for the website.

Once you have opened the site administrator simply follow the instructions and with your input your website will take on a look and feel all its own. The site administrator allows you to quickly set and edit the following:
  • Comapny name and contact information
  • Product prices and shopping cart functions
  • Handling fees by product
  • Scroll bar colors
  • Back ground colors or images
  • Font style for the website
  • Page titles or images
  • Store administration and policies page
  • And more!
When you have completed your website's administrative set-up through the site administrator you are ready to add the descriptive text and keywords to your website as outlined in the next section.

Entering and editing your StoreStarter™ website's descriptive text and keywords is easy if you use the StoreStarter™ Online Editor that is integrated into each "live" page of the website. Use only the StoreStarter™ Editor to edit your StoreStarter™ website's keywords because ONEinc's StoreStarter™ websites contain dynamic programming that can be damaged if you use another html editor. A "live" website page is one that is viewable by the public once published on the internet.

At the bottom of each "live" website page you can find the page editor icon: . Clicking this icon will prompt you for your username and password and then open the StoreStarter™ Online Editor for that webpage. Adding your page descriptions and keywords requires a rudimentary knoweledge of HTML. Compose your product descriptions and substitute them with the text descriptions that currently reside on each page. Then, compose and insert your meta tags and image alt tags. Repeat this process where applicable to all the pages of your StoreStarter™ website.

Keywords are the single most important aspect of a successful website and it is your responsibility to add keywords to your website under the StoreStarter™ Retail Website Program. Do not worry as this is a simple task for which we will give you detailed yet easy to follow instructions. If, after reading this section, you wish to learn more about search engines, then please visit our wholesale-members-only Search Engine Guide.

Keywording Overview - Keywords are text and text descriptions found throughout a website. Search engines use a website's keywords to determine where the website should be indexed within the search engine's database. If a website is keyworded correctly it will appear on a search engine when a person searches for terms that match the website's keywords. Think of a search engine as a yellow pages phone book; people look up businesses in the yellow pages by searching under subject headings. The search engine counterparts to these phone book subject headings are keywords.

There are many search engines but a small minority of them control the vast majority of keyword searches on the internet. Each search engine has a unique algorythm (a set of guidelines) that it uses to determine where a particular website ranks in its vast database of websites. Only the people who control the search engine know their search engine's algorythm thus you must make sure that your website(s) covers all the possible ques that a search engine might use to determine your website's index ranking for its group of keywords. This guide will help you do just that.

Keywording Is Not Hard, So Don't Make It Hard!

Keyword Research - Determine what keywords are relevant to your webpages and then determine which of those keywords are the most important in terms of attracting visitors.
  • Determine what keywords to use - First you must determine what keywords you should use. There are many ways to determine what keywords to use. Simple brain-storming of relevant nouns that relate to your website's content and the particular webpage you mean to keyword is a great way to start. Next, investigate your competition's website keywording. View a website's source code with Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser (at the top of the browser window click "View" and then click "Source") to see the keywords the website uses in its meta tags, alt tags and plain text (you can usually see all the plain text with a normal visit). Last, some of the best places to perform keyword research are the search engines themselves. Some search engines offer a feature called "Related Search Information." The Related Search Information will give you an idea of what people search for by general keyword on that particular search engine. The best search engine for this sort of analysis is Overture. Click here to visit Overture's search term suggestion tool. Perform a search using a relatively simple keyword and you will receive results that include related keyword searches in addition to the keywords' popualrity ranks. Google's search engine Adwords Program also offers related keyword information based on your input. Click here to access the AdWords Keyword Suggestion Tool.
  • Rank the keywords - Once you have determined all the keyword possibilities you must decide which keywords are the best so you can focus your efforts on these more important keywords first. Overture is a good choice for ranking related keywords. Overture's Saerch Term Suggestion Tool will tell you the numbers of searches initiated for that keyword in a given month relative to similar keywords. Click here to visit Overture's search term suggestion tool. Perform a search using a relatively simple keyword and you will receive results that include related keyword searches in addition to the keywords' popualrity ranks.
  • Apply the keywords
    1. Page Subject - Choose a subject for the page you are about to keyword and describe. This subject must be short and simple, and each page in your website should have a subject that is unique among all other pages. It is important to repeat the nouns in the page's subject in each of the sections below.
    2. Title Tag - This should be a page's subject. Create 5-7 words that describe the page and make sense. Use nouns and verbs but not adjectives. Take note that some search engines will display the page title as the title or description in the search engine's listings. Do not repeat any words in the title.
    3. Meta Tags
      • META NAME="description" content="?" - This should be the same as your title tag.
      • META NAME="keywords" content="?,?,?" - These should be nouns separated by commas that reflect the subjet contents of the particular webpage. Do not repeat any single word more than once.
      • Other Meta Tags - We've already taken care of these so you don't have to.
    4. Alt Tags - The words placed in alt="?" tags should be the same as the words you used for the META NAME="keywords" content="?,?,?". Pick one keyword for each alt tag. Verbs and adjectives are ok here but keep it short (5 or less words).
    5. Descriptive Text - This text is visible on the website and describes the page and/or the objects on the page to the reader. A short paragraph of 3-5 sentences will do nicely. Try to repeat the "title" at the begining of the paragraph and use all the keywords you chose for your meta "keywords" tag throughout the paragraph. If you are unable to use a keyword in your descriptive text paragraph in a manner that makes sense then you shouldn't use that word in your keywords or descriptive text at all. You can make your paragraphs longer however a short, simple and to-the-point paragraph is generally most effective. Of course a good sales pitch can be helpful if you are selling a product on the page so be creative when composing your descriptive text paragraphs.

Register with Search Engines
DO NOT REGISTER YOUR WEBSITE
UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED ITS SET-UP!

Registering your website with the many search engines can be an intimidating task and many webmasters are tempted to use "all-in-one" search engine registration services that submit a website to multiple search engines at one time. We do not recommend this. We recommend that you register a new website with the major search engines individually. There are but a handful of major search engines and they gather better than 95% of all search engine user traffic. Often times smaller, obscure search engines will use a major search engine's database to fill its own listings so you really need not worry about getting your website on every search engine in existence (better to save this task for a time when you have absolutely nothing else to do).

We recommend that you register one page of a new website with each major search engine and that one page should be your "index" page or the first page of your website (ex., the page that loads when you visit www.yoursite.com). Registering one page is all that is necessary since the search engine will "spider" or "crawl" your website and add additional pages. Registering multiple pages of a single website can be bad if the search engine suspects you are trying to gain an unfair advantage (this is called "spamming").

Search Engine Submissions - Some major search engine registrations are free while others cost money however they are all important because they will point visitors to your website. And, these are not just random visitors; they are qualified sales lead visitors since they used a search engine to look for what your website offers! Registering with the major search engines is a good investment that should pay dividends quickly if you have followed our guidelines and completed your website's set-up before you register. The links below will take you to the major search engines' registration pages. Follow the directions you find through each link.
  • Google - Provides search listings for AOL, Yahoo, Netscape and HotBot. Free, the last time we checked.
  • DMOZ - Otherwise known as the Open Directory Project. Provides search listings for Google Directory, AOL Search, DirectHit, HotBot, Lycos, Netscape Search and a lot of other smaller directory based search search engines. Free, the last time we checked.
  • Teoma - Provides search listings for Ask Jeeves, Ask.com, Excite, Search123.com, Metacrawler, Mamma, iLor and HotBot. 1 year "inclusion" subscriptions cost $18.00 per URL submitted if you submit at least 2 URLs.
  • LookSmart - Provides search listings for MSN, Lycos, About.com, RoadRunner and Inktomi. LookSmart has two programs: the first is a pay-per-click program with set-up fees of $29.00 and the second is a pay-for-placement program where you bid on specific keywords (like Overture; see below).
  • AllTheWeb - Provides search listings for Lycos and HotBot. AllTheWeb.com has a free submit service, which they do not guarantee, found here. AllTheWeb.com also has a guaranteed, fast inclusion, submission service that costs $32.30 for an anual set up fee and about $38.00 per unique URL. This paid submission will get your website onto Lycos, HotBot, Terra.com, AllTheWeb, Overture, InfoSpace, Excite, Dogpile, About.com, MSN, espotting.com, Google and more. Find the paid inclusion site here.
  • Inktomi - Provides search listings for HotBot among others. Place your website with Inktomi using the paid inclusion servcies outlined under AllTheWeb above.

Pay-for-placement Search Engines - Such search engines, like Overture, that allow webmasters to bid on and pay for search engine placement can be a double-edged sword. While you can outright buy the top search positions for any keyword on Overture we caution you to keep detailed records of traffic versus sales so you can properly analize the profitability (or lack thereof) in using a pay-for-placement search engine.
